The course aims to study composite materials adopted in biomedical applications. At the beginning the students will be introduced to natural body tissues features, either for stiff either for soft organs. Intro will be given also to the present scenario of artificial devices adopted as prosthesis.
A second part of the course will introduce composite materials for external prosthesis, i.e. carbon fiber in polymer matrices as well as ceramic fibers in ceramic matrices. Production technologies, included Additive Manufacturing opportunities, will be discussed with the students.
A third and final part of the course will deal with materials developed for internal prosthesis, either permanent either temporary, like scaffolds. Resorbable composites and related interface connections with the body tissues will be studied in a framework of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine scenario
